Traveling through Kansas
Hey guys,,,I need a quick synopsis on bringing a pistol on our trip. OC? CCW only? What about in my truck on the road. We just retired and will be going TX, CO, KAN, MISSOURI, ARKANSAS and back to TX. Thanks!
Do you have a CHL? If you're not a holder of a CHL with KS reciprocity, firearms must be unloaded and inside a container that completely encases them when transporting in a vehicle. Even a Ziploc bag counts!
The state of Kansas allows open carry, but many Kansas municipalities do not allow it within city limits.
I am not a lawyer. If someone else has something to correct or clarify, please chime in.
assuming you have a concealed carry permit that kansas recognizes then you are are good to go. Don't plan on open carry. Even though it is legal no one that I have come across does so you are asking for confrontation. in the car you can carry it however you would like if you have the permit.
It would help to know what state or states you have CCH from. It makes a difference. TX is recognized by Kansas.
Here is a list put out by the state:
Reciprocity list
As others have said, Kansas is an open carry state but local regulation may prohibit open carry. It is too much of a risk for me. Especially since a CCH trumps local laws.
OC varies by city and county. Too many variables just for passing through.
I'd recommend concealed if your permit is recognized by KS. Most places where guns aren't allowed are marked, and I doubt you'd be in any that aren't marked if you're just passing through. Stay out of churches and libraries. ETA: If you go to any state parks, it's permitted, unless they are on Corps of Engineers land. It can be hard to tell which is what.
If you really want to OC, then I'd suggest unloaded.

Churches aren't off limits unless they're posted.
