Good, I'm still in time to make the "Neither grand, nor an island" joke.

There is a "growing" population of hispanics(mostly illegal) in Nebraska, Grand Island seems to be popular with them.

I don't really know anyone that lives there. It's a decent enough place. Plenty big enough to have all the shopping and amenities one would need in a city. I think there's a pretty nice water park there and they just got the State Fair, which has been a big success.

2 nice bigger gun shows each year. 2 nice ranges: Heartland Public Shooting range and Grand Island Rifle Club

Fishing: right by the Platte river and not far from other lakes in the area with a variety of fishing/hunting opportunities.

Weather: Warmer than North Dakota. Hot and humid in the summer.

Cost of living: Can't help you there, but it's probably not a whole lot different than ND. Car license and property tax are likely higher in NE than in ND.

At one point the city was on water restrictions because of water contamination. ( You might want to talk to some one in city management to see if that is a problem now. I don't know if that is still the case or not. Of course you can always live in a near by community and drive in to G.I. It is hot and humid there during the summer, and it is growing, I mean it isn't Lincoln or Omaha, but it is ok. They get some flooding in parts of the city at times, during the spring or heavy rains. I am pretty damn sure regardless of where you buy a house in Nebraska you are probably going to pay higher taxes on your cars and house than where you are now. I travel through there a fair amount seems like they always get more crappy weather than we do, I am out farther west. Hail, ice, wind, tornadoes . . . .

edited for spelling.

Aurora is an amazing community just 20 min east of GI. Lots of people commute.

GRAND ISLAND UPDATE.. Will folks i spent a couple of days in Grand Island NE after my job interview. VERY NICE TOWN . PEOPLE WERE GREAT. Hornady Ammo plant is located there and CASE TRACTOR has big combine plant in GI. The thing that really inpressed me was the city owns a riflge range. man is it nice, 100,200,300,600 yard range, trap, skeet and sporting clays. one of the nices ranges i have ever seen. Platt river is there with good fishing. lots of deer , coyotes but not to many pheasnts left in NE, farming practics have put the hurt on nestings area. not much public land for hunting like ND so i would need to make some contacts. I could picture myself living there. I hope to get some postive feed back from interview, we will see if i get a offer. marty

Were you at the range on sunday? I think I talked to you. You were either in a white or a maroon pickup.

Not my range, but yeah they've got the best one I've ever been to. I was the guy at the Appleseed shoot that you spoke with. There are many small towns around the GI area that are well within commuting distance.

Grand Island may have a decent hispanic population, but to be honest... most all of them that I run into are well rounded and nice to get along with. Go to Lincoln or Omaha and they are extremely rude, and a good number of them there don't speak any English. I live on the Northwest side of Grand Island, and there are only about 10 hispanic families in the entire area, and all of them that I have met are again, very nice people... better than a lot of white people I have met. All of the dirty non-English speaking hispanics stay locked up near South Locust...

I go up around St Paul (30 miles north of GI) to hunt, and pheasants and coyotes have been extremely scarce the past few years. Of the few packs of coyotes, they are all mangy, so hides are worthless. My girlfriend' grandfather had Game and Parks come out and do some conservation on a bit of his land, and has been releasing Pheasants on other sections he owns, so hopefully in a few years it will be back up. Prairie dogs are plentiful up there, hes got 5 fields infested with them at the moment, and gives me ammo all the time to go kill them off. If you end up here, I'd be glad to take you shooting.

Depending on where you move to, flooding is a pretty big concern. In my area, the basements get a bit of water in them almost once every year, and in '04 we had water filling the streets up to the houses, Shopko parking lot was 8 feet deep in some places. That was a 100-year flood tho, so you shouldn't have to worry about it too much.

If you have kids, I highly recommend Northwest Highschool, you will need to opt them into it. I graduated from there in '08, and now after being able to compare myself to others in college from different high schools, they prepared me MUCH better than the typical high school.

I've traveled quite a bit, and while GI definitely isn't the nicest town out there, I honestly don't see why everyone hates it so much, unless they are living on the Southeast side, that would be understandable.

As previously stated, Aurora is a good choice if you would prefer a small town. If you want to live on an acreage in the country, there have been a few selling north of GI about 5 miles out.

If I get the job i will be back on the NE FORUM , Maybe we can put a praire dog hunt together with some one from Garnd island. I have ( 5 ) AR5 rifles we could shoot. Marty
