Archery
My youngest lad (10) bugged me to buy him a kid's compound bow for shits"N"giggles, so I did, and he's been shooting it at the farm where we have our ponies.
So tonight I took him to the local archery club as they have an introduction course for beginners, there were only three people altogether so I had a go too. As my master eye is the left eye I ended up with a left hand bow, (bow held in the right hand and the arrow drawn back with the left). I didn't realise just how cack-handed I am with the left hand, getting them arrows on the string were fun. We got to shoot re-curve bows at 20m, we both had a brilliant time and will be going back for more, as those with access to my facebook will have seen.
Now what I'd like to hear, is if any of you are into archery and about your experiences.
I have posted this over on the UKHTF to, and would like some input from my fellow €uropean's

I was, as a child and later, before going to guns...
but more into craftmanships than real sport shooting..
during the years, I made quite efficient things, mostly trying to clone america indian îtems...
bow and arrows are handmade... same goes for arrowheads and feathering. these were done trying to emulate Lakotha's war arrows around 1870...

That's really quite amazing Patrick, did you work of a pattern or did you just learn to do it once you got started? Are the arrows made from dowelling or did you just fashion them from young tree's? What type of wood did you use for the bow and arrows?
Might have to give that a go myself.
Good work, very impressive

I read here and there in books and the internet to learn different techniques... than I tried to adapt these ancient techniques to the modern materials available... (finding buffalo tendons is quite hard nowadays..)
I made arrows from trees, but also bought some... it all depends what you can find, and what you need to do... for example, the arrowheads where cut and handcrafted from steep plates..
As for the different woods, i'll try to find the english translations...
If its in German I'll manage

I was at a long bow club last weekend and the youngest son and I had a brilliant time, as the weather was crap we only got to shoot 30m indoor. Them wood longbows with no frills and thrills (sights etc) are a good laugh to shoot, and once you have got the hang of it quite accurate. I'm enjoying learning something new, but I still haven't decided what type of bow to buy, but the instinctive bow shooting comes more naturally to me, piece of wood, string and a hand full arrows, oh and a target, KISS
