Moved to NJ
Well it hurts but I have had to make the move from Ohio to NJ. I have been reading the threads on here for some time but its truly strange to move from a free state to here. I am currently in Northern NJ. So any tips tricks advice for someone new to the area? I also did not bring any of my property (pains me that they are locked up at my dads house) with me not sure of the laws that almost seem to be written with dammed if you do dammed if you don't, like they don't care about the armed criminal element, but the person who wants to have safety for there family or a sport shooter is the truly evle criminal out there.
Welcome and sorry to hear that you have to move to this state.
Well, its probably not as bad as you may think - probably. You can bring your handguns with a mag capacity of 15 or less, so outside of a G17 or full-size XD and the like you will be good to go.
No registration or anything like that - at least not yet

. Your ARs will need to be post ban compliant and there is a "list" of banned guns. Ask here about any of your specific semi auto rifles
as a starting point. All mags, pistol or rifle need to be 15 or less. Your bolt, pump, lever guns are GTG as well. Good luck....

Welcome to the PRNJ, there will be some things that you'll have to adjust to:
1. Restrictive Gun Laws
2. Over Zealous Officials in the Judicial and Law Enforcement System
3. High Cost of Living
4. The Rat Race in the North ( road traffic wise )
5. Rude New Yawkers
I don't have any relationship with the guy, but I would highly recommend reading completely the "New Jersey Gun Law Guide" by Evan Nappen. It is an eye opener about just how illogical the laws are here in NJ. I keep it my range bag so if I'm stopped by a cop who is not familiar with the law, maybe this will save my ass??
http://www.evannappen.com/gun-law-books.html
I also keep his contact info in my phone just in case I wind up in the pokey. He is the reported best gun lawyer in NJ.
In addition to joining the NRA, I would recommend joining the Association of NJ Rifle and Pistol Clubs (ANJRPC) which is the NJ NRA affiliate and the NJ 2nd amendment society (NJ2AS) as they are leading some of the lawsuits to regain our freedoms in NJ.

Welcome wolf 515. Your story is familiar. I grew up in Hubbard, north of Youngstown, and went to college in Akron. I moved to Mahwah NJ to follow a job opportunity in 1993. The plan was for it to be temporary until the Ohio economy recovered. I ended up marrying a Jersey Girl and am now here almost 19 years. Take my advice: an Ohio boy needs to make his way SOUTH of I-195 ASAP.
NJ laws are not really as bad as our complaints make them seem (or as the people in Free Territory perceive them to be). You'll pick them up quickly and will be able to bring your property with you. We are here to help.
Welcome to NJ.

Ask as many questions as you need of your new state-mates.
i second the reading of nappens books / videos . a good read
Thanks to everyone, been a few days since I have been on here to respond. I will get the book and look at moving south, I have an apartment now and am not fond of the noise level of the neighbors. The shocking thing is the higher prices. Mostly the price of homes and the property tax, when looking the first time I had sticker shock. The AR thing is crazy, I miss my local shop I could walk in and get just about anything. I have heard there are a few different little things between Northern and Southern NJ. Are the home prices lower down south?

Home prices vary widely down here, depending how close you are to the shore, Philly, etc. And we have pricey communities too. But in general, home prices are probably 20-to-25% lower down here. Unfortunately, 25% off "WTF!!!" is still "Holy Cr@p!!"

Not to mention property taxes. Paramus is the engine of the retail economy of NJ. So much so, business taxes pay 51% of ours! Where other towns around here pay 10-15K per year for comparable land and home size we pay, $7-8K. Housing here is $20-30K more expensive. New builds are taxed at 2% of the new build. Even in our most compressed market these new builds were starting at $750K. Lately $900K+. They are fugly McMansions but that's what they are putting up.
If you are are republican I say welcome!!!!

Really, no. Most of NJ is actually quite conservative. The problem is, the majority of the population lives in the areas that are Liberal.
Here are the 2010 election results for State Assembly and Senate. You will notice that nice line right along I-195. ;-)
Just stay the F––K AWAY from Camden.
Here is the 2008 Obama vote. Even then, the majority of the districts were conservative.
