Do I need to convert US $ in Medicine Hat?

Work is sending me to Medicine Hat, AB (DRDC Suffield) for a week.
Will I need to hit up an ATM or can I use US dollars since it's relatively close to the border?

depends on the store most should take it though at least they do where i am
