 Upstate NY Retreat

Morning...I think I have finally convinced my wife to let me buy a place upstate to be used as a weekend get-away. We live in NYC. My goal is to get something within a 2 hour +/- range so it is not such a burden to get out to the place. Currently looking into maybe buying land and building a house in a few years when i have some more $$$ (unless i can find a great deal now). Primary use for the place would be hiking, shooting, hunting, ATV, a workshop to build stuff (generally a "guy" playground). I really want to be able to take my son away and teach him how to build stuff, camp, shoot, etc. (all the things he can't learn by living in NYC). Unfortunately my wife and i both work in NYC (pretty long hours), so we are likely stuck here for a while - hence the desire for the weekend get-away spot.

Still working on a budget. Would be interest in the hives thoughts on where to focus our search. My wife is a "city girl", so I need a town that has some amenities (e.g. grocery store, not too far from shopping etc.) or i will never get her up there. At the same time, cost is a focus, so i want to try and find a place with low taxes. Also, where can i find out if there are rules against shooting on private land? I would love to put in a range (on the back of the property where my wife wont know :-)

Appreciate the input. Thanks!

Loaded Guns, Discharge Distances, Lights, and Guns

Question: How far from a building do I have to be to discharge my firearm?
Answer: You cannot discharge a firearm or bow within 500 feet of any school, playground, occupied factory or church. You cannot discharge a firearm or bow within 500 feet of a dwelling, farm building, or structure unless you own it, lease it, are an immediate member of the family, an employee, or have the owner's consent. This does not apply to the discharge of a shotgun over water when hunting migratory game birds and no dwelling, public structure, livestock, or person is in the line of fire.

If it is a weekend/vacation home, it will get burglarized at some point. Having said that, Oneonta/Delhi/Cobleskill area is nice.

Anything north of McLean Avenue in the Bronx is upstate.

IMO traveling 4-5 hours RT from NYC is going to get old real fast. Forget your backyard range and look for something in southern Putnam or southern Dutchess. Both counties are easily accessed from the Taconic State Parkway and rail service from Grand Central Station in case you and your wife/kids need to travel at different times depending on holidays/vacation/work schedules. Both counties issue unrestricted pistol licenses and there are several private ranges in each county to shoot and/or have property to hunt on locally or have property in upstate NY.

Stay "Up State" not Northern NY: we don't need more people from NYC & NJ coming up here, buying land then posting it.
Camps: Sooner or later he local riff-raf will see all those Posted signs with contact information in the City, and proced to clean the place out....even with SP & DEC patrolling, they usually don't find out about break-ins until well after the fact, or they get stoppped or arrested for something else.

Bookmarked for when I'm on home computer.

If you can, go to PA.
Lower taxes.
Your dollar goes further.
Oh and better gun laws.

If you must stay in NY then I would suggest northwestern Orange/southwestern Sullivan.
Decent shopping for the missus not too far.
1 1/2 -2 hrs to "culture" of NYC
You can find decent sized pieces of land.

My input is to try and find something with a house on it already. With the way things are they are much cheaper to buy then build right now.

Last stop on the Metro North is Poughkeepsie. Nice area. There are houses next to each other in the city, but go a few miles out (major horse farms) and distance between houses becomes more rural. If you head towards CT, it becomes very upscale. Like Orvis shooting school upscale. Plenty of private clubs with ranges and much, much land to hunt. Perfect for a city girl that knows how to drive. Millbrook is pretty fancy, has a gun club, and a very nice public pool. Loads of Madison avenue type stores and food.

The only way that your wife wont know that you are shooting on the property is if there is a range next to you on someone elses property.

Nothing south of Ulster or northern Dutchess. Nothing east of Sullivan. There are deals out there to be found.

Ulster County would probably be good for you, just take 87 North from the City or Metro North to Poughkeepsie in Dutchess Co. You would have quick access to the Hudson River, Rondout Creek, Ashokan Reservoir, etc.. Lots of boating/fishing opportunities. Catskills on your doorstep, Minnewaska State Park, Mohonk Mountain House for some golf or hiking, skiing at Hunter Mountain. Hiking/rail trails are everywhere, it's a very pretty area and the fall is stunning. Plenty of shopping in Kingston, even more across the river in Poughkeepsie. 10 years ago they were issuing unrestricted CCW, don't know if this still occurs.

^^^^^THIS

It's closer by car than most good parts of upstate NY and you don't have to deal with NY's stupid gun laws. 14 years ago I bought a vaction home in Delaware County. I live here full time now, have for a while. I live 1 hour from the PA border and not a day goes by that I don't kick myself for not knowing back then what I know now.

STAY OUT OF NY BUY IN PA.

If you don't do this there is something wrong with your brain.

There is a lot of cheap property near Mohonk, it is 15 min drive from Kingston and not that far from Woodbury Commons, but honestly, Catskills are kind of a dump. The big plus is shooting and hunting on your property will be no problem. Your family will get real comfortable with both as hunters walking around with guns and shooting at all hours is common. Lots of summer only people, so it clears out big time the rest of the year. Many people do lease hunting land, so find out if your neighbor has 75 guys coming every fall who are used to hunting your property. A big part of where you want to be depends on where you are in NYC, East side, stay east of the Hudson, etc. A unique thing with the Catskills, is if you are ethnic, you might find an enclave. Kingston for example has a lot of Orthodox, there are sections of the Catskills with lots of Muslims, might make your wife happier to be in good company.

Herkimer County is nice, too bad MAG162 already sold his camp.

If you come to Herkimer , Oneida, Otsego, or Madison Counties and need a caretaker when you're not here let me know.
I've done it for years for MAG.

Thanks all for the replies. Many good points raised that I need to further consider. I need to learn more about owning a home in another state and any tax issues that raises as far as filing income taxes in multiple states. I will check back in soon. Pls feel free to throw out suggestions / thought from your own experiences. Thanks.

There are no issues. You file taxes where you live. The only issue is that you get to be free of New York's anti-gun stupidity.

My recommendation is rent for a year or two. Learn the area, join a couple gun clubs, hit the shops. It will pay for itself. Personally, I would get a house next to the bar, grocery store, post office, etc for convenience, and a lot of flat undeveloped land accessible only through a right of way on some farmers land. Preferably adjoining state land. As long as it is a short drive away. That way, you dont have to hire a caretaker and you always have eyes on the place. If you want to hunt, water running through attracts a lot of game.
