Saw an ad for unrestricted permit class at a gun shop

I was at Taylor and Vadney's in Schenectady on Saturday and quickly glanced at an ad on their counter saying something along the lines of guaranteeing to get an unrestricted handgun permit.

Anyone in the capital region know anything about this? I assume that it only applies to Schenectady county residents as Saratoga County tries like hell so you don't get your limited permit. Nobody was handy so I didn't ask any of the employees. While I can't remember the guys name (Vick maybe?) I'm 99% certain it's the same guy I took the standard handgun course for when applying for my hunting/target permit.

I spoke with Vic F. about two weeks ago. He does the pre-permit classes for Schenectady and Saratoga counties. Apparently Schenectady is opening up a path to get your restrictions lifted after some period of time (like a year...) by taking a class and scoring proficiency during a range portion. Sounds like he got it worked out!

If this works for Schenectady, he's hoping to pitch the same to the new judge in Saratoga... here's hoping !!

Yes they are holding it at Guan-HO-Ha-Fish and game club for in Glenville for $200, I think? (someone correct me)

The thing that cracks me up about it all, is that one of the qualifications (correct me if i'm wrong?) is to "rapid fire a certain number of rounds in to a target within a specific time. The kicker is that they have a very strict "NO RAPID FIRE" rule there, so my question would be, as, how would one keep up their "proficiency" with their handgun, after attending this class, because after the class, I'm sure the "NO RAPID FIRE" rule will be back in effect.

I suppose you could simply find another place to practice this kind of drill, like I have (sometimes, but not always), What about the individuals who have nowhere else to shoot except the club?

I found the # and gave it a call. I believe I reached Vick's wife who said that it is for Schenectady county only at this time.

I really hope this goes well enough for Saratoga county to consider it.

Yes, it would be nice to see this happen throughout the entire NYS where ever they are restricted.

Depends on the time I guess. The Marine Corps Qualification "rapid fire" portion calls for 10 rounds in 60 seconds. Not exactly ripping them off...

Wouldn't it be nice if the licensing officials didn't randomly assign permit restrictions across the state and force law-abiding citizens to show cause for exercising their 2A rights? We already know of the MD case where a Federal judge found the very idea of showing cause to be unconstitutional.

I'd like to see restrictions lifted statewide too, but one shouldn't have to pay $200 and take a class to somehow qualify for a right they already have.

Don't get your hopes up too high. Acording to the paperwork on the county website, taking and passing the class does not garantee that your restrictions will be removed. You'll have to write a letter and interview with the judge. You'll also have to provide a "detailed discription of proper cause" whatever that means. The course of fire seems a bit over the top, and the cost is a bit high for no garantee of getting restrictions removed. The only thing you do get is the education about NY laws, the rest is a roll of the dice.
