No apologies - these whistles need to be shoved up the Community Board's and police chief's asses. These seniors are easy prey and should be allowed carry permits (if desired) to defend themselves and given a greater police presence in their neighborhood.

A fucking whistle?

Senior citizens given whistles to avert muggings in 48th Precinct

Older people in neighborhoods just south of Bronx Park say they hear gunfire outside their windows nearly every night. They are targets for muggers and scammers as well.

Robberies are up 41% in the 48th Precinct, which encompasses West Farms and other neighborhoods in Community board 6. There were 89 robberies as of Apr. 15 of last year, and there have been 126 robberies for the same period this year, according to NYPD statistics.

Last week about 60 senior citizens, some with canes and walkers, packed a meeting room at Casella Plaza senior housing in West Farms to learn ways to protect themselves.

CB 6 organized the Whistle Blower Safety Initiative, and armed the seniors with whistles.

“If you feel someone is going to bring you harm, this is an alert device,” CB 6 District Manager Ivine Galarza said, “ You can just whistle and, definitely, the person will run.”

They shouldn't be making such promises, and I can't believe there wasn't some reply to that comment from disbelieving elders in the crowd.

Great, so now if these people survive the extra beating they'll get for blowing a stupid whistle, they can alert people of their flatulance after the perp shoves it up their asses'. The concept of a whistle stopping crime ended with the handheld police radio. When cops used to use whistles to signal eachother, a whistle wasn't an entirely bad idea. With cell phones, radios, and the like, most newer cops wouldn't even know that whistles were once part of their duty gear, let alone respond to one. Start handing out J-frames to the affected seniors and see how fast the muggings go down.

I'm not surprised in the least. Bunch of old sheep. My grandfather had a pocket pistol (in the least) on him till the day he died. He also had a full auto Tommy Gun. He used the Tommy Gun on a black bear rootin in his garbage.

Not for nothing, If I am out and about at night and I hear a Rape Whistle, I am running the other way.

Because I know some serious shit is going down that I want to steer clear of

Dear Ivine, take your dopey whistle and shove it. Like anyone in NYC is going to pay attention to that.

Nothing stops a home invasion quite like a harmonica

A harmonica is considered a "high-cap whistle" and as such, is illegal in NYC.
You can use those in other parts of NYS, provided they were manufactured prior to September of 1994.

Perhaps someone could set up the beloved mayor of NYC. Show up with the press in tow. Give him a whistle and ask him to surrender his pistol and pistol permit.

But what about the poor attacker? Couldn't the whistle damage his hearing?

The ACLU must put an immediate stop to this program!!!

FWIW, Bloomberg doesn't have a pistol license. He does however have a full protection detail of NYPD detectives that go everywhere with him.

Does Bloombutt summon his million dollar + per year security detail by blowing his whistle.

Looks like one of those dollar store whistles you'd give your kid. I don't know how effective a "pppffftthhtttttt" and a wad of spit is at detering an attacker.

And how many more crimes would be solved or prevented if that "detail" wasn't pampering his whiney-ass?

None, they'd just be driving popeye, or one of the deputy commissioners of something or other. I'm NO fan of bloomy, but the mayor of NYC is responsible for more people, and money than many of the states in this country, and many small countries around the world, he or she should be protected.
