I did some searching but couldn't really find the answers I'm looking for. I'm just a normal person, no LE or MIL, and taking this class as more of a learning experience and to spend time with some friends among other reasons. This would be the first rifle class I've taken, although I do shoot 3gun and very familiar with the gun. Here are the requirements for gear (with a few removed)
- pistol belt with strong side holster/double magpouch
- AR-15 rifle with at least 5 magazines
- tactical sling (single or two point)
- a means to carry 4 rifle magazines on your person
So I am torn on the type of gear to get for the class but I do know there's no point in going crazy. I don't know if I should pickup up a simple war belt, with a few rifle/pistol mag pouches or if I could adapt my current 3gun gear to work with the class. Also, if it matters, I am using a VCAS sling. Here's what I am thinking:
Option 1: Go with my 3gun setup which includes a CR Speedbelt, one AR mag holder, double pistol mag holder, blade tech pistol holster. For this setup I would add 3 mag holders and call it a day.
Option 2: Go with a new setup which consists of a simple MOLLE war belt, suspenders, two double AR pouches, one double pistol pouch. Still need to check if I would need a new pistol holster with this setup or not.
Costs for both are about the same. Maybe $20 more for option 2. Thoughts?
I'd use your 3-gun stuff. Maybe get a basic minimalist chest rig to hold the other AR mags and to refill the mag pouches on your belt from. Four AR mags on the belt may get cumbersome.

I agree. Small chest rig and your existing gear sounds like the way to go.
Use whatever you would use if you were shooting your weapon in a real scenario. If all you have is 3-gun gear and that's what you would use then by all means use that. If you think that you would like to go to a chest rig or plate carrier later then you can go ahead and pick one up and start training with it.

If it were me, I would do my best to train in the manner that I would likely find myself able to respond. That means I usually train with CCW setup including cover garment and a "Grab and go" bag or active shooter response shoulder bag containing magazines and or medical gear.

This. What I would end up doing is using my MOLLE belt for 3-gun, but in this case you can do it the other way. A very basic 4-mag chest rig is a good option to have anyhow depending on what you're going to end up doing. I won't be carrying more than 2 AR mags on my belt line anymore unless its what I HAVE to use, because I have nothing else. You want to make sure that you have enough magazines on the line so that you can complete the drills and not slow up the rest of the line.
