Everything but the shotgun
My dad and I are thinking about giving the 3 gun stuff a try after shooting cowboy for a while.
I just finished building my AR (18inch rifle length heavy barrel) and have a couple 9mm pistols and .45 acp. The old man has a couple 1911's and a Mini 14. While we know the mini 14 isn't perfect, we figured it would work for a couple shoots, until we can find out if this is what we want to do. Only issue is the shotgun department. The closest club to us is in Durham, NC and requires 22" max barrel length. We both own multiple shotguns, but the only ones under 22 inches are lever action (1887 and a 1901 10 guage).
I don't plan on buying anything until I after I get the chance to observe a match. With that being said I also like to think ahead and am trying to figure out the shotgun issue. I can get a cheap 24" barrel for my 835 Mossberg and cut it down to under 22 inches. But then I wouldn't have a choke tube, which for some reason I remember reading is required. I really don't like the idea of buying a new gun for my first match, but if the cut down barrel is a no go I might have to.....
Any input would be appreciated. Thanks.
contact the club and let them know your situation, they might be willing to work with you and let you shoot.

I'd do this as well....especially because a max barrel length of 22" is an outdated rule; especially since most 3 gun shotguns today run anywhere between a 20-26" barrel with a 24" being extremely desirable.
The club might either let you use your current gun or find a loaner for you guys to use

....this, most local clubs for local matches will let you run what you got. I have not seen rules with the 22 max since a long time ago.
Agreed with Gorilla, that the 22" rule is gone for the most part. If you're still wanting to cut the barrel down, I can highly recommend Briley and they'll recut the barrel for chokes too.

If I cut down the barrel I was going to go all ghetto and just throw it under the ban saw, and the take the dremil to smooth out the crown. If I buy the barrel and then pay someone else to cut it down I would be into it enough that it would be better to just buy a new gun.
When we go to watch our first match I am going to ask about using my Mossberg for the first couple matches if nothing else. I am of the opinion of buy once and cry once. But no need in crying if I end up thinking that sport is not so fun. I don't think that is going to happen as it appears to be a ton of fun. Although it seems like ALOT of shotgun. Quoting club website "Typical match round counts are 70 rounds of rife; 120 rounds of handgun; 50 rounds of shotshells; and 5 slugs."
Those are pretty typically numbers for a club level 3 gun. The shotgun arrays are typically set up to burn through, so its normal to shoot 8-16 rounds all in a row.....add in a few shotgun stages and you get pretty close to 50
You better bring your guns with you when you go watch.....cause your gonna wonna shoot!
Trust me....that's not a lot of rounds. The posted round count for that local club match is like 1.5 stages at the MGM Targets Ironman.

I was planning on it just incase I had the chance to shoot. Due to rain and schedule issues I haven't even test fired my AR yet..... I have about 300 rounds I plan on sending down range on Sunday. Should be enough to zero in the MBUS's and red dot......Maybe I should get some more just in case. Will be nice when my bullets get here so I can reload some.
Definitely take your guns to the match. If you came to one of our local matches there would be several shotguns for you to borrow.
I would think this match would be the same. Shooters tend to be pretty generous, especially to new guys.
Somebody needs to update the club's rules.

I found cowboy action shooting to be this way as well. I wasn't planning on shooting the first match I attend, but wouldn't mind taking a run at the side matches for a little "seat time" just to see what works and doesn't work for me. Kinda getting excited just thinking about it.
