Why use a PRS on 3 GuN?
Just Curious as to why the NST chose to use a PRS on their 3 gun? Seems like the prs is designed for set shots rather than run and gun. anyone else running the PRS that can chime in?
A rifle length buffer/spring setup (A2 stock, PRS, Vltor rifle stock, etc) generally shoots a bit softer than a carbine buffer and spring. If you have long enough arms to run & gun with a fixed length rifle stock, it makes sense. I tried a PRS for a while, but my arms are too short to run and gun with anything other than an adjustable stock. YMMV.
A number of people do it as a personal preference more than anything else. Its validity to use is hard to argue given the success of shooters like Matt Burkett who use it as he's won just about every 3-Gun event out there.

For two reasons, first it balances the config of our rifles very well and second the adjustability of the stock.
I use one to offset the weight of my barrel front sight combo. The rifle feels less nose heavy.

I saw the NST guys running them and asked them about it. Cold responded just as he did above so I tried it. Works out VERY nice!
Adjustability, head and length. And it kinda looks cool

I have a new 3 gun AR with a heavy contour DPMS MK12 barrel and CTR stock. It is only 8.5 lbs, but is feels a bit nose heavy when i am just holding it. Not so much when i am actually competing with it. The CTR is .55 lbs, the PRS is 1.63 lbs. I guess an extra pound wouldn't really be a big deal. I don't carry it but a few seconds during a stage.
How much do your guns weigh with a PRS?
Why not a UBR? PRS purely for better fitting vs the UBR?
Has anyone tried adding weight to a stock to see if it helps, like a CAA stock saddle cheek piece and add weights in the storage compartments?
Living here in NJ does not leave many options for stocks that most of you guys have. That being said I chose the VLTOR A1length Rifle ModStock . Now that I have ran this stock with full length buffer on everything from carbine length systems to rifle length, I'm convinced the handling and recoil impulse of the A1 configuration is the way to go. If the PRS is not your style and adjustability in that length is not needed, then try the A1 ModStock . I also pour steel shot into the storage tubes as added ballast and I slide on the rubber butt plate to give me an additional 1" if needed.

I was using an A1 stock. No lead weight available for that one or I would have taken the cheap option. I don't use any of the PRS adjustments, I only wanted the weight.
Steel1212's 308 with PRS is really funny. Heavy as shit!...until you shoulder it then the weight just disappears. Held it with the muzzle up and I was like WOW that's heavy. Shouldered it and it felt just like my rifle. It's all about the balance.
I really do love the Magpul PRS especially the adjustability! I run different scopes on my AR's for different matches. Having the LOP and Cheek adjustment makes a huge difference. Never noticed the weight as being a problem.
Take care,
Matt Burkett
I hardly feel worthy posting on this thread with Matt and Jansen (check out their videos BTW-Very helpful!)
I have a PRS on both of my 3 Gun rifles and the added weight helps balance for quick shots and transitions and the adjustable cheek piece makes for a good cheek weld.
Here is what I usually run
JP CTR-02 with 18" Barrel and PRS Stock with Meopta K dot in a LaRue mount-Weight 10 lbs. 7 oz
JP LRP-07 with 18" lightweight barrel and PRS stock with a Swaro Z6i in LaRue mount-Weight 11 lbs 5 oz.
It may seem like a lot of weight, but remember you're shooting one relatively short 3 gun stage at a time, not an all day carbine course with these. For that I have KAC/MD 16" with a T1 that weighs 6 lbs 12 oz.
It's not for everyone, but it's what I started with and it works well for me.
