How often should say a recoil spring be changed? Is there a free-length to go by?
Reason I ask is I am shooting a used rifle I bought with an unknown round count. The guy said it had about 900 on it but the throat was worn to the point of fliers every 3-5 rounds at 600. (just re-barreled with a new Douglass 1:7 from CLE, WOW!! that sucka flat out shoots now!!)

Also, was wondering about other wearable parts too such as bolt cam, firing pin ect.

Thanks, Ron N.

Man I have put an untold amount through my competition AR. The only part I have ever replaced is a extractor spring. I am on barrel number, I couldnt tell you. People worry about the small parts to much when they should worry about hitting the line. If the gun stops functioning or gets sluggish. Change parts.

Sir, while I might agree somewhat with Mr. _erik_, I will mention that I keep a replacement bolt in my shooting stool at all times. I have had to replace the extractor a few times and fumbling with the small parts on the firing line is a pain. It's much easier to just replace the whole bolt assembly and worry about replacing the extractor later. I believe I've replaced the barrel of my Colt HBar five times, that means I have close the 30K rounds through it, except for the extractor and extractor spring I don't believe any other parts are near worn out. Exactly. Not much to wear out. The A2 is not a compromise design thats hard on parts like you tend to see with some of the M4geries out there, and usually its owner induced failure from lack of care and maintenance or using the cheapest IE out of spec questionable quality components. I would recommend the Tubb extractor spring, its chrome silicon and will last a long long time. Just take care of the rifle and lube it and love it, and you will be fine. The ready to go bolt assembly is a great idea, and $45 is cheap too.

Sounds good. I don't really see much wear that would cause me to replace parts on any or my AR's, generally I only put new ones in when there is a problem and run 'em wet. I have been using a dab of grease on the bolt cam pin, seems to like it. Other than that it's clean after about 120 rounds with a shot of CLP on the bolt in between. Can't remember the last time I had a malf including my 16" gun used for multi-gun with brass that has over a dozen cycles.
