New IDPA rules and the addition of Defensive Multi-Gun!!!
About time they caught up. 3 gun is really taking off..

Reading the course of fire quickly, it is not worth it for me to even take my gear out of the safe.
Practice in any form is a stepin the right direction
Some of those rules make me go

agreed, just not worth the match fees and gas. if i want pratice i'll pratice for free.
It will be interesting to see what the adoption rate is for these rules. My IDPA club has been running occasional long gun side stages after our regular monthly pistol matches for many years. I would be surprised if there is a lot of enthusiasm for learning a new rulebook, rather than just continuing with generally accepted safe handling and stage design principles.
I didn't even bother reading the new rules; my friends will fill me in on any pertinent changes.

One of the clubs here has been running carbine matches on the side and was about to start doing 3-gun as well. I'm just excited at the prospect of being able to compete with my long guns more often.
Can't wait for the first sanctioned DMG match.

It's okay, don't test yourself and compete with others. You'll never find out how good you COULD be.

I do that in better 3 gun formats, usally USPSA based or outlaw side matches that use IDPA scoring (West Point 2 gun comes to mind).
I hope the local clubs pick this up, could be very fun

It will only be fun if more folks get involved. I'd bet a Pepsi that most clubs staff's are already working overtime and getting burned out just running monthly pistol matches. Now shooters want more, I'm all for it but lend a hand. If you've been an IDPA member for more than five years and haven't become a safety officer or gotten involved with your club helping to run the match your doing it wrong. (Byrd-Shooter, I'm not saying this to you but rather to most people who somehow think that well crafted and challenging stages just magically appear set up on match day)
Anything that promotes the shooting sports in a good light I'm all for. I'd like to see a juniors division 10-16 that uses nothing but .22's. We need younger shooters (and new voters)
Multi-Gun is a lot of fun, but I think it will be difficult for IDPA to have it keep with its rules.
IDPA is all about being "realistic", but a "realistic" multi-gun stage is going to be pretty damn boring.
The fact is, most people do this because it is fun. A fun multi-gun stage has a lot of targets, a lot
of movement, and a good scenario story. Shooting an unrealistic, but fun, stage is still going to help
you be a better shooter in a real situation. IDPA is going to have to really stretch their whole "realistic"
stage requirements to have fun multi-gun stages, I think.
I also still can't get past the requirement to keep magazines that you dump with you. What is the deal with that?
If I'm really shooting bad guys, and I think I'm low on ammo, so I dump my mag to get a fresh one in the gun, I
am sure as heck not going to bother picking up my nearly empty mag.
No matter what anybody says, all of these shooting events are games. Games that we play for fun.
I think the number one consideration should be safety, and next should be fun. If its fun, more people will
do it, and they'll come back. The more you shoot, the better you'll become. Even if you're shooting at "little green
men from mars" or whatever they were poking fun at in the rules, you'll still be a better shooter. I like the idea
of keeping things realistic, but occassionally being somewhat silly is ok too. People enjoy it. I just think IDPA is
maybe limiting themselves a little too much. But then again, I guess thats what makes them different.

I tend to agree with this thinking. It's pretty much the reason I stopped shooting IDPA. I don't want to wear a stupid vest, retain my mags, or shoot behind cover so I go to USPSA matches and blaze away as I see fit.
I'm not knocking IDPA, because I'm sure there are a lot of people that enjoy it, it just has too many rules which I feel limits the fun and competitive nature.

Well said. I am just getting into three gun. I would like to see this format develop on it's own. USPSA and IDPA rules both have their share of short comings. 3 gun competitions are loose and most of all
fun. Rule bending and gaming have not had enough time to infect the sport just yet.

You're right on with this. I think there are a lot of shooters out there who don't realize the effort that goes into designing stages, setting up the match, running the match, then cleaning up. You get people who want to show up, shoot and go home without lifting a finger to help out, and it gets frustrating. Regardless of the rule set or club, I think the more people you have helping the better things are going to be.
And you're also correct about getting junior shooters involved. We recently changed some of our rules to encourage junior shooters, and significantly reduced match fees for shooters younger than 18.
